The Red Dress
2024 International Quilt & Fiber Arts Festival Challenge
Picture
February 15: Only a few more kits remaining!   Get yours now!

Your Inspiration: From 2009 to 2023, pieces of the Red Dress have traveled the globe and been continuously embroidered onto. Constructed out of 85 pieces of burgundy silk dupion, the garment has been worked on by 366 women/girls, 7 men/boys and 2 non-binary artists from 51 countries. (The total number of artisans is now 380!)  Initially the project sought to generate a dialogue of identity through embroidery, uniting people around the world without borders. However, over the 14 years the dress has also become a platform for self-expression and an opportunity for voices to be amplified and heard. It has been exhibited in over eleven different countries and is coming to the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum in late 2024-early 2025! We will be the West Coast premiere for this extraordinary exhibit! Please visit The Red Dress website to learn more about this unique project.

The 2024 Challenge will be a bit different than previous years. We will ask that all pieces be submitted to the Museum in time to be on exhibit at the 2024 Festival. During the event, festival goers will vote on their favorites and the Museum will award a “People’s Favorite” challenge winner! We will then select at least the top ten favorite challenge pieces to be shown on exhibit along with The Red Dress when it is opened to the public.

Challenge Kit - $20.00 Your fee goes directly to help cover exhibit costs and shipping for The Red Dress exhibit. Each kit contains guidelines, an entry form, information sheet and lots of reds!
Kits are limited supply and available in the Museum's gift shop or call (360) 466-4288 x 101 to order by phone.   Each challenge entry requires purchase of a kit.

Entry Guidelines:
  • Your entry may be any type of quilt or fiber art including wearable art and may be of any shape, but the combined total of all sides of the entry cannot be more than 72” (excluding wearable art.) A round entry must have a diameter of at least 6” but not more than 22”.
  • Your Challenge entry must arrive at the Museum on or before 5pm, September 15, 2024. Entries will be taken to the festival venue for exhibit October 4-6, 2024.  The piece voted as “People’s Favorite” challenge piece and at least nine other favorites will be held at the Museum and re-displayed during The Red Dress exhibit. (Exact exhibit dates pending but selected artists should plan on their piece remaining with the Museum until April 1, 2025.)

The Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum is located on the land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. Many Indigenous peoples thrive here — alive and strong.
With gratitude, we honor their stewardship of these lands since time immemorial to the present day.
This land acknowledgement does not take the place of authentic relationships with indigenous communities.
We also aim to highlight the major artistic contributions made by indigenous Pacific Northwest artists to the history of weaving and textile arts through exhibits and public programs.
