Dorset Buttons
Friday, September 30; 2 – 5pm
Instructor: Robin Atkins
Called the cartwheel, this is the most basic design for Dorset buttons, a type of needle-woven button made as a cottage industry in southern England during the 1700s and 1800s.
From a variety of variegated and plain thread colors, students will choose a kit to make either a small or a large button. If time permits, students may buy a second kit and try a variation of the basic design.
The four basic steps for construction are: wrapping the ring, winding the spokes, weaving the center, and (if desired) making the shank. Traditionally these buttons were stitched onto garments right through the center of the button. But for use on a knitted garment, it’s nicer to add a needle-woven shank. Besides using them on garments, they make great embellishments, jewelry, journal closures, etc.
Kit Fee: $5, to be paid to instructor on day of workshop
Supply list: students need to bring a pair of sharp embroidery scissors, and (if needed) vision enhancement (“cheaters” or optivisor). That’s all.
Non-members: $35.00

Lea McComas
"Fiber art is exploding; there are a myriad of materials and techniques to be used. I find I’m easily overwhelmed by all the options. So, my personal challenge has become, “What can I do with basic materials of fabric and thread? How far can I go with just these elements to create images that are compelling?” In this striving, I find that my art is truly in my hands: it becomes about my skill, my creativity, my vision and my ability to bring to life images that compel the viewer to stop and spend time with my art.
I find my inspiration from simple images of daily life. I love to be caught off guard by the unexpected: the impish grin an a boys face that leaves you wondering what he is thinking, or the way shadow and light fall across a fresh bloom to further highlight its beauty. When an image startles me, I will create a composition using that image which will, in turn, startle the viewer.
I know a piece is good when I see people walk up to view my work and it compels them to stop for a few moments, then move in closer and perhaps hold up a hand or hold out a finger as if struggling with the urge to touch the piece, then step back to view from a distance again with greater appreciation."
Lea's Thread Painting techniques have been featured in the last three issues of Quilting Arts Magazine: Feb-March, April-May, and June-July issues.
