NEW for 2024 - Youth Categories (ages 12-18) - more details below
2024 ENTRY CATEGORY AND SUB-CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS
Note: Maximum size in any category is 96” wide x 84” high.
Perimeter is the combined measurement of all four sides of a quilt.
NOTICE: Entries that the artist has paid to have professionally quilted are not eligible for awards except Peoples Choice. The quilting is a core element of the artist’s design and skill and, as such, should be performed by the artist or, if a group entry, by at least one of the artists. Professionally quilted pieces can still be entered and judges comments provided to the artist.
Quilt Categories
Quilt entries must consist of three (3) distinct layers - top, middle layer, and backing. All categories include Bed or Wall quilts. Framed or mounted pieces will not be accepted in quilt categories.
Traditional: These quilts incorporate piecing and fiber selections based on vintage or antique quilts made from published patterns, books or electronic/digital format, including patterns in public domain.
Pictorial: Quilts in this category should illustrate recognizable images of animals, people, places, objects or landscapes. Includes non-realistic, fictional and fantasy. Specify large or small in your category selection. Pictorial Large: Perimeter more than 160”. Pictorial Small: Perimeter less than 160”.
Abstract: Quilts in this category should reflect principles of abstract design. Form and composition should emphasize line, color and design, be innovative and not representational or pictorial.
Modern: Quilts in this category are inspired by modern design and may include the use of high contrast, expansive negative space, simple shapes, improvisational piecing and prominent quilt stitch design. An update of a classic pattern also fits this category. Specify large or small in your category selection. Modern Large: Perimeter more than 160”. Modern Small: Perimeter less than 160”.
Appliqué: Quilts in this category should be composed of at least 50% appliqué in any technique (fused, machine, hand, etc.).
Pieced: Quilts in this category should be composed of at least 50% piecing in any technique (paper, machine, hand, etc.).
Miniature: Quilts in this category must replicate a standard traditional quilt using reduced scale and miniaturization in any technique. In a photo, you should not be able to distinguish the size of a miniature quilt from a large quilt. Maximum perimeter is 96”.
Other: Quilts or quilted items in this category will include one or more of the following construction techniques: whole cloth, crazy quilts, embroidery, and fabric manipulation. If we receive more than six pieces of one type of quilt, we reserve the right to create a separate category.
